Style 1 Vice Versa
I played with the number of spokes, their thickness, and their angle to each other. Finally, I found a design that I thought would work both visually and dynamically. I tested the pattern by generating an animation of the design in motion. Of course, the real test was actually creating the design. My first attempt wasn't quite right. It was still too unbalanced. I adjusted the design and refined my center of gravity calculations to locate the exact point more precisely. The second attempt worked as I had hoped.

One half of the pattern shows collapsing fans, while the opposite half expands. As soon as this becomes apparent, everything is erased in a flashing pattern. The constantly changing rotation speeds, combined with this pattern, create a piece that's difficult for me to follow.

Style 2 Duality
When designing a kinetic sculpture, many different types of balance must be considered. This was especially true for duality.

More complex wheel patterns typically require more restrained movement than less complex wheels to prevent the sculpture from creating visual chaos. Duality, in my opinion, has a more complex, asymmetrical wheel design. To fully understand the resulting patterns, the mechanism needs to move the wheels in a predictable way. In contrast, a sculpture like Infinity has symmetrical wheels, for which I used a more random and unpredictable mechanism to move them. After designing the wheel for Duality, I had to experiment with the different movements I could create to find the most visually exciting combination. Once I achieved that pattern balance, I had a sculpture!

Style 3 Boomerang

This is a majestic and mesmerizing moving wall sculpture powered by kinetic energy. Once wound, the internal spring and gears work together to rotate the front and rear wheels forward and backward in various patterns for up to 14 hours.

How do they move:

Hamsters! Not really. Each of my kinetic sculptures is a wooden machine powered by a constant-force spring that must be wound. While the sculptures are visually interesting when stationary, they become truly mesmerizing when in motion. After a simple winding, they entertain with movement and gentle sounds for varying periods of time. Longer operating times were always a goal. Some will run for 1.5 hours, while others will remain in motion for up to 24 hours! This is a significant increase from my original designs, which stopped after 20 minutes.
